A Travel Guide to Scotland

Scotland is one of the four nations of the United Kingdom and is the most northerly country on the island of Great Britain. Scotland’s history is long and monuments to this abound the country. Once the only area of Britain the Romans could not conquer, and later continually at war with their English neighbours, today Scotland is a country of outstanding natural beauty and is welcome to visitors the world over.

Due to Scotland’s previously mentioned turbulent history, the country is home to several castles and fortifications. Most of these castles are still in amazing condition and are some of the country's most popular attractions. Edinburgh Castle is perhaps the most famous of these and sits on volcanic rock overlooking the city. The castle is open to the public and one of its more unique features is the ‘One O’clock Gun’ which is a cannon fired at One O’clock each day, this is a historic tradition originally used as a signal for ships.

One of Scotland’s more interesting attractions is the Falkirk Wheel. This is a boatlift that rotates to carry boats up and down between the Forth and Clyde and the Union Canals. The wheel was opened in 2002 and has since become one of Scotland’s most popular and interesting attractions.

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and is popular with tourists. Scotland has a history of science and innovation; the Glasgow Science Centre is a testament to this. With hundreds of exhibits, several of them are interactive and the largest IMAX cinema in Scotland, as well as a fantastic planetarium; the Glasgow Science Centre is a day out that should not be missed. Another of Glasgow’s attractions is its Cathedral. Built by the patron saint of Glasgow St. Mungo, whose tomb is located in the cathedrals crypt, this is one of Glasgow’s many important historic sites and well worth a visit.

There is a wide variety of self catering holiday accommodation in Scotland ranging from flats in the major cities to holiday cottages to rent in the beautiful countryside.
